Swiss-Austrian artist Rahel Oberhummer centers her work around the relationship between non-human life forms and human societal structures. The notion of mastery over nature is deeply rooted in the Western worldview – a legacy of modernity. Oberhummer explores this dynamic and focuses on the subtle interactions between humans and the environment with an almost animistic attentiveness to the ecosystems on which we depend and yet endanger. From this perspective, questions arise that the artist pursues through scientific research. The material plays a central role in this process: it is not merely a malleable substance, but an active collaborator. Its properties, its transformability and reactions shape the work as much as the underlying concept.
